The Mac now starts up and does its little animated Welcome movie then requests a few registration details. My intention was to immediately update it to the latest OS (presumably Sierra again). So I dug out the only OS discs I have, Snow Leopard and after verifying, repairing and eventually, erasing the hard disc, I clean installed Snow Leopard (via an external disc as the internal CD-drive hasn’t worked for years). After reading a couple of forums, I was able to restart it and reinstall Sierra which it did up to around 95% complete, then stopped. It was running Mac OS Sierra which was as far as it would update but a couple of weeks ago, it crashed and wouldn’t reboot. I have an old 17” MacBook Pro, 3.06GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb Memory, 1067 MHz, DDR3, purchased September 2009. (And yes, if I do getting working again I will be turning off auto-updates and probably never update it again) Unless anyone has some constructive suggestions. A google of which states "A circle with a line through it means that your startup disk contains a Mac operating system, but it's not a macOS that your Mac can use. "īasically, the auto-update that is supposed to help protect my machine turned it into an expensive paperweight as I can find no way to fix it or access the data on it. No official Genius Bar in the town I live in.Ībout half the time in between crashes I get the prohibitory symbol. I have it completely disconnected from peripherals and have attempted the above-mentioned "fixes" many multiple times and probably a few others as well over the course of about 3 hours. So I cannot access Disk Utility tools or reinstall OS.Ĭreated a boot USB on another mac and attempted to boot off that in the utility window, did not restart. Recover mode (including online recovery) does not work, it just crashes as per the above-mentioned pattern. Safe mode is unavailable - it just makes it crash faster during the restart. It crashed on the next restart and so and so.ĭid the NVRAM reset procedure, did not work. Mac auto-updated, early during the restart it crashed. 2018 15 inch MacBook, worked perfectly until today's auto-update.
